Warning: National food product recall ineffective!

I am posting this here because of the severe danger of botulism poisoning; when I was in school, rotating in a medical ICU in Ohio, a female patient was brought in with "botulism" as her diagnosis; she died 12 hours later...

There is a 52-year-old man currently hospitalized in Albuquerque that is being tested for botulism, and if positive will join five others— two in Indiana, two in Texas and one in California— who have tested positive since mid-July. The New Mexico man began showing symptoms July 26.
"He's only able to communicate with his toes and feet," Sewell said. "He's paralyzed otherwise and on a ventilator. We don't know his prognosis. Recovery would be incredibly slow— any recovery could take weeks to months."

A national recall of products made by Castleberry's Food Company began July 18 and was expanded days later to include about 90 products. Two children and two adults were reported ill from contaminated products. A federal health investigation has centered on the company's Augusta, Ga., plant as the source of botulism contamination. Botulism is the most potent toxin known to mankind.

Almost 100 canned products— mostly chili, beans, hash and pet food— are being recalled. Among the many brand names Castleberry's Food Company's Web site says it has recalled are chili and meat products under its name, as well as those under Austex, Best Yet, Big Y, Black Rock, Bryan, Bunker Hill, Cattle Drive, Firefighters, Food Club, Goldstar, Great Value (Canada only), Kroger, Lowes Foods, Meijer, Morton House, Paramount, Piggly Wiggly, Prudence, Southern, Steak 'n Shake, Thrifty Maid, Triple Bar, and Value Time. Recalled pet food brands were under the name Natural Balance. For a complete list of products, go to www.fda.gov or any of the Web sites listed below.
