Albuquerque's "Pornotopia" kicks off

ALBUQUERQUE - Organizers say the city's first erotic film festival is meant to celebrate sexuality, but others are finding the whole idea shocking.

Matie Ficker organized the festival, which she calls "Pornotopia."

"It was a middle-of-the-night idea," she said.

Ficker and Molly Adler run a store called "Self Serve," which sells everything from sex toys to pregnancy books.

They said they want the festival to help bring sex into the mainstream.

"We're showcasing these movies because people should know they exist and men and women alike might find there's something they might enjoy, laugh at, relate to and find attractive or hot," Adler said.

The Guild, the city's only independent theater, is hosting the festival.

Guild co-owner Peter Conheim said it's almost like a blast from the past.

"This was a porn theater 30 years ago and it was showing much more sleazy porn, I'm sure," he said. "All we're doing is continuing our edgy programming."

Of course, the festival is drawing criticism. "It seems the world has come to such a point, there's apathy," Mary Salazar-Sutton said. "Nobody seems to care what's happening."

Others had no problem with the festival. "If you want to go to it, go to it," Stephen Williamson said. "If you don't, ignore it, walk straight past. Everyone has a right to do what they want to do; it's a free country."

Pornotopia is the city's first erotic film festival. No New Mexico filmmakers are participating in the event.
